Why comparing a stock with its peers beats looking at it alone
How peer comparisons work, why the right peer group matters, and how CookieStocks approaches it in plain English.
Numbers need context
Is a 12% operating margin good? For a supermarket it would be exceptional; for a software company it would be weak. Almost every financial number becomes meaningful only next to similar companies.
Choosing the group
A good peer group shares the same kind of business, not just the same broad sector. Standard classifications such as the GICS sub-industries used on these pages are a sensible starting point. Very small groups can mislead, so it is worth checking how many companies are being compared.
How CookieStocks does it
Signed-in members see each company scored against a broad set of US stocks and ranked within its own peer group, with a plain-English summary of what stands out, a confidence level, and a link to the source of every number. The exact method is our own and is not published, but every input is sourced and can be checked.
